I love this play. Having played the role of Benedick myself I was excited to explore this play from a Director’s angle. While I felt confident about telling the story, I had no initial ideas for the setting for the piece. In my first meeting with the costume and set designer, Eleanor Bull, I asked her to offer some suggestions. I was thrilled when she came back to me with the idea of setting the
play in 1920’s India; The British Raj! I was a little concerned at first about issues of cultural appropriation as I did not have a single actor of Indian heritage in the cast, but these were soon allayed by Eleanor and her passion for the possibilities this provided. The design concept worked brilliantly and provided a rich foundation from which develop our telling of this story. The show was fantastic and so colourful! (2012)
